VOLUNTEERING
WHAT DOES OUR VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR DO?
Throughout the year, I work with the local Charlottesville affiliate to schedule and organize volunteering for HUVA. These opportunities range from weekly half-day build volunteering, Saturday full-day builds, helping at the ReStore, and meeting any community needs that may arise for homebuyers, including babysitting their children while they attend classes. In this position, I also work to organize special trips, specifically fall and spring break trips. While this year has seen volunteering put on pause, there is ongoing communication with Habitat to ensure that we are supporting them in any way we are able.

IMPACT
A huge goal of HUVA's is to help students recognize the impact that we as a part of the University have on the Charlottesville community on the whole. Through supporting Habitat for Humanity in the volunteering opportunities they look for us to fill, we are able to give some back to the community from which we take so much, but we do it on Habitat's terms, rather than stepping in with a savior mentality. Every aspect of volunteering is valuable to helping people fulfill their dreams of owning a home, from supporting raising of funds through the ReStore to helping build the homes themselves on the site. Working in person with these homebuyers helps provide a perspective to students that is often missed in the UVA bubble, and it can mean so much to the community as well.
